Federal deficit grows by $300M in January

March 25, 2010 in Uncategorized by macolsen

Source: CBC.ca (Original Article)

The federal deficit — the amount by which government spending outstripped revenue — rose by $300 million in January, the Finance Department said Friday.

That brought the shortfall for the first 10 months of fiscal 2009-2010 to $39.6 billion.

Officials said January’s deficit growth was smaller than others in recent months because of a $1.7-billion increase in corporate tax revenue due to year-end settlements.

The deficit rose by $3.1 billion in December and by $4.4 billion in November.

In its budget earlier this month, the Conservative government projected a full-year deficit of $53.8 billion, little changed from September projections of about $56 billion.

At the same time, expenses continue to mount, up $1.8 billion or 10.8 per cent, reflecting higher program costs for programs like employment insurance because of the weak economy.

Ottawa was running a $500-million surplus at this time last year and had an almost $10-billion surplus two years ago.

Overall, roughly $17 billion of this year’s accumulated shortfall is due to measures under the federal government’s economic stimulus plan, including tax cuts, expanded EI benefits and the auto-sector bailout.

EI payouts alone have increased by $5.1 billion or 41.4 per cent in the first 10 months of the fiscal year.

At the same time, Ottawa has lost $178.7 billion in revenues compared to the previous year, with corporate cheap flight Coffs Harbour to Brisbane tax receipts accounting for about one third of the drop-off.

Chile’s new president

Mar 12th 2010 | SANTIAGO | From The Economist online

SEBATIÁN PIŇERA looked shaken, rather than jubilant, as he was sworn in as Chile’s president on Thursday March 11th. Minutes before he was reminded of the scale of the task he faces in rebuilding a large swathe of the country after a massive earthquake on February 27th. The same area was hit by an aftershock that, with a 6.9 magnitude, was only slightly smaller than the quake that devastated Haiti in January.

Three other large tremors followed during the inauguration ceremony in the National Congress in Valparaíso on the coast of central Chile. Outside people started to head for the hills as the national emergency office issued a tsunami warning. The sea, in fact, remained calm but Mr Piñera cancelled a lunch with visiting foreign leaders—some of whom did not look as if they could have eaten much anyway. After sending Rodrigo Hinzpeter, his new interior minister, to the capital, Santiago, to co-ordinate a response to the emergency, the new president boarded a helicopter to the aftershock’s epicentre in the O’Higgins Region, just south of Santiago.

Some towns were again left without water or electricity but the shocks caused relatively little damage and only one death, from a heart attack, was reported. In his first act as president Mr Piñera declared the region a “catastrophe zone”, putting it under military control. “Prevention is better than cure”, he argued in a reference to criticism of his predecessor, President Michelle Bachelet. Her government’s delay in sending soldiers to the Maule and Bío-Bío regions farther south, the epicentre of the original earthquake, allowed widespread looting to break out.

His prompt decision was generally welcomed. The various earthquakes have left nerves frayed and, as Mr Hinzpeter flights from Newcastle to Albury suggested, Chileans are anxious for a semblance …continue reading
